AutoWeekâs long-term RX-8 is not only gas thirsty (averaging 13 mpg) but oil thirsty too (8 quarts of oil in 18,000 miles). Does this happen to all the rotary engines? ...is it worth it if every time you fill up the tank (which is often) you have to check the oil?I'm quite happy with my Miata.

It doesn't happen to all Rx-8s. Sounds like Automobile got stuck with a crap early build car (and not all early builds are crap, most are OK, but a few squeezed out before they were ready for prime time..)
Mine gets 16mpg in agressive city driving, at 3000 miles. Now at 5000 it's up to 17 and change. Who knows how much it'll be by 20,000 miles. It just keeps getting better.
Their 8, I think, is using too much oil. I'm putting in 1.25 quarts per 5000 miles -- right where it should be, imo. The last 13b-based Rx7 I had used about a quart every 3000 or so.
The 8 is probably the best wankel car from mazda yet. Yes, even over the mighty FD.
