First of all, I am alive; just in case anyone was wondering. As luck would have it, I had taken a vactaion day yesterday to go to Cedar Point. I found out about it at around 10:20pm when I returned home. I made some phone calls, and this is the extent of my knowledge (plus, I would like to evanesce a myth the media was touting last night).
I worked in the PBL building since it opened up until this past January when I changed jobs from being Weatherhead's programmer to CWRU general. I heard time and time again on the TV that PBL has no right angles. That's false. About two-thirds of it consists of traditional hallways and rooms with right angles. You can get floor plans and take a virtual tour of the building here (note: I have a sneaking suspicion that that link might disappear). It is not the labrynth that was being desribed by the news outlets. Actually, it is fairly easy to navigate.
There are four entrance points to the building. Three of which are magnetically locked and only accessible via card access. The other, the main entrance, has an unarmed security person seated behind a desk.
The shooter entered through the rear glass doors by using a sledge hammer to break them shortly after 4pm. This is fairly impressive considering that the glass is fairly thick. I would not have thought that they would have yielded to one sledge hammer blow. Once the shooter obtained access, he entered the main atrium on the 1st floor and began shooting. At that point, apparently, people did make for the doors and escaped. Others located away from the exit points were stuck.
What happened after that, I cannot say. I have yet to hear from any of my old coworkers, and I sincerely hope that they are okay. According to the media, there was one fatality and three wounded. I have no information concerning who they were.
If and when I hear anything else, I'll make sure to post it.
