I have this OCD blog category but have yet to use it, so here I go. I am going to cover my OCD over the timing of reheating items in the microwave and how I start and shut down my car.

Microwave Timing OCD

If you are actually creating a microwave piece of food such as a Hot Pocket or something, just following the timing directions as specified on the package is acceptable. However, if you are reheating an already prepared food item such as leftover pizza, the number you choose has to consist of 1 repeated digit or it must be prime in base 10 notation.

So, valid times include 33 seconds, 44 seconds, 1 minute 11 seconds, etc. Other valid times following the prime rule include 17 seconds, 37 seconds, 43 seconds, 1 minute 57 seconds (because 157 is prime).

The reasoning for this one is that if you want to put something in the microwave for 30 seconds, hitting 3-3-start is faster than hitting 3-0-start. The prime number thing got thrown in because prime numbers are always the right answer when you need to choose semi-arbitrary numbers. (97)

Car Start-up && Shut Down OCD

When shutting the car down, all electrical devices like radio, fan blower, defroster, windshield wipers, anything and everything, must be turned to the off position; the wheels should be straight; parking brake set; tranny put into 1st gear. The reason all electrical devices are shut down is to keep the strain on the starter to a minimum the next time I come by to start the car. Wheels are straightened to prevent the tire's sidewalls from sitting at a funny angle. The parking brake and 1st gear settings are there to keep the car from rolling (obviously) and to make a FWD car impossible to tow.

Starting the car is a little more complicated. First things, first -- normal precheck to guarantee that the seat and mirrors are properly configured. Remove car from first gear and into neutral. Turn the ignition and fire up the engine. Turn the headlights on even if daytime running lights are equipped (they usually are not adequate). If it's warm out, turn the temperature setting to maximum coolness, turn the blower on at it's smallest velocity, and set it to blow out of the defroster. If it is cold out, turn on the defroster, turn the temperature to maximum heat, and turn the blower on at it's smallest velocity, and set it to blow out of the defroster. Adjust temperature and fan speed settings as necessary. (I always turn the blower on so I can smell any weird smells the engine compartment might be producing.) If it is raining, turn wipers on to appropriate level. Fasten seat belt, disengage clutch, put it in gear, go.

I am a strange, strange person. And, I have plenty more OCD's to document. These are just the first two.

I diasgree on the microwave settings. All microwave settings should be in multiples of ten. This for two reasons:

1. Ten is an even number.
2. It takes ten seconds for the microqave turntable to completely turn around.
